Internationally renowned American immunologist Anthony Fauci has been infected with West Nile virus. The 83-year-old was treated in hospital for six days and is now recovering at home, CNN and the New York Times quoted a Fauci spokesperson as saying. A full recovery is expected, it said.
Fauci stepped down nearly two years ago as chief medical adviser to the U.S. president and director of the National Institute of Infectious Diseases. He had previously become a central figure in the U.S. fight against the coronavirus. The renowned scientist led the National Institute of Infectious Diseases for nearly four decades and served under a total of seven U.S. presidents.
Excellent expert in infectious diseases
He is considered one of the foremost experts on infectious diseases in the United States. His reputation extends far beyond scientific circles and American borders. In the highly politically charged debate over the coronavirus pandemic, Fauci has frequently been the target of criticism and hostility.
West Nile virus originates from Africa and is transmitted by mosquitoes. According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), most infections do not show symptoms; about 20 percent of those infected develop a feverish, flu-like illness that lasts for a few days, and about one in a hundred develops meningitis or meningitis. There is currently no protective vaccination for humans.
