Almost all 150 residents of the settlement in Upper Austria, which was closed after the devastating gas explosion, are allowed to return to their homes on Friday. For the time being, only eight to ten objects in the immediate vicinity of the accident site remain blocked.
“We ask all residents to wait for the call from the city office,” says Mayor Christian Partoll, because with a few exceptions, the settlement will reopen on Friday. The unloading will take place step by step, so street by street. “As soon as a street is ready, the power goes back on,” explains the mayor.
Few have to wait
Only for the owners of the houses in the immediate vicinity of the accident site it is still “please wait” – the gas concentration is still too high here. Since the ban on space in the settlement has already been lifted, this area is secured with barriers. A structural entry ban applies to the owners of the buildings.
Devastating explosion
In the affected area, a huge gas explosion took place late on Tuesday evening after deep drilling, in which a 65-year-old was seriously injured. Because gas was escaping over a large area, all residents were evacuated overnight. Many of those affected stayed with relatives, 21 elderly people were taken to retirement homes.
Opening often delayed
Although the borehole could already be closed on Wednesday evening, the amount of gas in a number of buildings was still too high. For this reason, the opening of the area has recently been repeatedly postponed.
