Fellow firefighters from Lower Austria fought a forest fire in Corsica under difficult conditions. They were actually only in the Mediterranean for training purposes.
A delegation of 26 Lower Austrian Florianis in Corsica has experienced first-hand how quickly an exercise can turn into an emergency. The comrades actually set off for the Mediterranean island in six vehicles to take part in the two-week EU project “Prepositioning”. This involves stationing forces to preventively combat forest fires in particularly vulnerable areas. But the training would soon become a bitter reality.
A lightning strike with consequences
A forest fire broke out near the community of Olmi-Cappella after a lightning strike. The flames had already spread over an area of around 3,000 square metres. After receiving all the details from their French colleagues that evening, the local firefighters were ready in the early hours of the morning to initially reach the interior by land on impassable terrain. From there, they were flown by helicopter to a mountain to fight the inferno under the most difficult conditions.
Despite the extreme heat, our emergency services successfully extinguished the fire within two hours, after which we returned by helicopter.
