What does years of alcohol abuse do to a person? And how do you manage to draw a line in the sand? Wolfgang Möslacher was addicted to alcohol for decades – and now abstains.
It was 48 years ago that Wolfgang Möslacher drank his first beer. “Egg beer. So beer with two raw eggs and sugar fizzed.” He was only nine years old at the time. “The little ones got this to keep them calm,” he recalls, and you can tell it’s a painful memory.
A lot has happened since then: more and more alcohol, the first ‘film break’ at the age of 14, later prison, homelessness and in between attempts to stop drinking. Friends have died, and twenty years ago my own father. “He was an alcoholic too,” says Wolfi, who has been drinking for decades. On August 26, 2004, he stopped.
