The crash of a crawler excavator on the Schildalm in East Tyrol ended fatally for a 56-year-old worker on Sunday: the man was apparently thrown from the driver’s cab and remained lying in the stream bed with head injuries. The excavator fell even further.
On Sunday morning, a 56-year-old Austrian was carrying out repair work on a road in the Tauerntal (municipality of Matrei in East Tyrol) in the Stockbach-Graben area south of the Schildalm at approximately 1,750 metres above sea level with a crawler excavator.
At approximately 09:45, for unknown reasons, he fell with the excavator on steep terrain and suffered fatal head injuries. The accident victim remained in the stream bed approximately 50 meters below the crash site and the excavator came to a stop after another 70 meters – also in the stream bed.
Eyewitnesses saw the drama
The incident was witnessed by a person who was on the other side at the time of the accident. This started the rescue chain. The emergency doctor of the rescue helicopter “Christophorus 7” could only determine that the 56-year-old was dead.
The body was then recovered by the police helicopter crew using rope and flown into the valley.
The local mountain rescue service and FFW, the Alpine police and two patrols from the Matrei police station in East Tyrol were also present.
