Twins tortured – ‘killer babysitter’ faces death penalty in US

Date:

She has an angelic face and could pass for a teenager. But according to the Pittsburgh District Attorney’s Office, Nicole Virzi is the devil personified. The San Diego college student is accused of first-degree murder in the death of a six-week-old baby and attempted murder with torture in the death of his twin brother. The prosecution is even pushing for the 29-year-old to be executed for her crime.

During semester break in Pittsburgh, Virzi worked as a babysitter for the newborn twin sons of a couple she was friends with. According to the lawsuit, obtained by TV station WPIX, Ethan Katz and Savannah Roberts considered the daughter of a well-known Manhattan cardiologist “a close friend” and “trusted her deeply.”

The babysitter said it was an accident
When Virzi alerted the parents on June 15 that their son Ari had an unusual groin injury, they took their baby to UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. They left their second son Leon with the babysitter. This alerted 911 two hours later at around 11:15 p.m. She stated that she was preparing a bottle in the kitchen when she heard a loud scream coming from the living room. She claimed that the 1.5-month-old fell out of his rocking chair and hit his head. In the emergency room, a severe skull fracture and brain hemorrhage were discovered. Leon died just a few hours later.

It is said that twins were physically tortured
According to the Public Prosecution Service, the attending physician at the children’s clinic raised the alarm: “The injuries of both twins showed all the characteristics of child abuse. They were caused deliberately and were not the result of an accident.” The police investigation showed that only Virzi could be the perpetrator and that she had physically tortured both twins.

A young woman was noticed in the past for a similar crime
That is precisely why the Allegheny County prosecutor wants to seek the death penalty: “The defendant committed the murder in conjunction with a second serious crime: torture.” It states that Virzi has previously been convicted “of serious crimes against a child under the age of twelve.” It does not specify what these were.

Virzi vehemently denies all the allegations and insists on her innocence. The University of San Diego PhD candidate is in custody until the trial begins.

In the past 125 years, the state of Pennsylvania has executed only two women. Irene Schroeder was executed in 1931 and Corrine Sykes in 1946.
