Tense calm on the border between Israel and Lebanon after the attacks over the weekend

Date:

Israel is maintaining a state of military emergency in anticipation of what might happen. The attacks this weekend left four dead, three in Lebanon and one in Israel.

The border between Israel and Lebanon began a tense calm on Monday, following a day of cross-air attacks between the Israeli army and the Shiite group Hezbollah on Sunday. After sunrise, the air raid sirens on the Israeli side were activated only once because of a drone. According to the Israeli army, the Defense System successfully intercepted “a suspicious aerial target.”

Despite the peace, Israel maintains military emergencyapproved yesterday by Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, allowing the Israeli military to issue instructions to the population in the event of new attacks.

The night before, however, was a night of bombing and cross-attacks. Israel carried out intensive bombing in southern Lebanon, with over 100 warplanes. It was a preemptive strike by the Israeli army, after it had determined that Hezbollah was preparing for an imminent large-scale attack aimed at the north and center of the country.

Hezbollah claimed to have launched 340 projectiles and considered the attack a success, “completed and accomplished.” Four people were killed: three in southern Lebanon, one of whom was a militiaman from the Shiite group Amal, and an Israeli Navy soldier.

The Shiite militia had announced the attack weeks ago, in revenge for the killing of its top military commander, Fuad Shukr, in an Israeli bombing on July 30 on the outskirts of Beirut.

Hezbollah stood in solidarity with the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas when Israel launched its offensive against the Gaza Strip following the October 7 attack. Since then, the border fire between Israel and Lebanon has escalated to become the worst since the 2006 conflict, killing more than 630 people.

Iran has also promised Israel retaliation for a July 31 attack in Tehran that killed then-Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh.
