Macron rules out appointing a prime minister from the left-wing coalition and opens a new round of talks

Date:

Macronism has announced that it continues to reject a government of the New Popular Front, despite the absence of ministers from France Insoumise, while the left is pushing for the candidacy of Lucie Castets.

Talks over the election of the next French prime minister have ended with a refusal Emmanuel MacronPresident of France, to appoint a prime minister from the New Popular Front, the left-wing coalition. The Macronists reject this possibility, even if it does not include ministers from La Francia Insumisa, because, despite being the power that has given the most deputies, they believe that it would not survive the motions of censure from other groups.

In this way, Macron has opened a new round of consultations with the groups.

On his part, French left pushes for Lucie Castets’ candidacy as prime minister to apply the results of the parliamentary elections. In the same way, the New Popular Front (NFP) has announced that it will not return to the Elysée for new talks with President Emmanuel Macron, unless it is about “the modalities of cohabitation”, which would imply that the next prime minister has no ties with the head of State.

Macronism has explained that will reject a coalition government of the New Popular Front despite the fact that there are no ministers from France Insoumise (LFI), as Jean-Luc Mélenchon has offered, which has been the red line until now.

For acting Prime Minister Gabriel Attal, the proposal for a leaderless government of France Insoumise is a “simulation of opening” that conceals a “coup d’état” by Mélenchon. This is because the NFP, once in government, would apply its electoral programme, which is in fact a “faithful replica” of the LFI project and which, according to him, “would bring France to its knees”.

Attal has called for an alliance between left-wing and right-wing ‘republican’ parties, leaving out the far right as well as La Francia Insumisa.

It is still unknown when the new prime minister will be appointed. Macron has not set a specific deadline for taking the step, although all parties expect movements this week.
