Decision made – Steffl terror suspect finally deported

Date:

After the second hour-long trial in just a few weeks, it is finally clear: the 29-year-old Chechen, who is said to have planned a terrorist attack on St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna and Cologne Cathedral around Christmas, will finally be deported!

The Federal Administrative Court has dismissed the complaint against the decision of the Federal Office for Immigration and Asylum regarding the deportation of the suspected IS man. However: Instead of the lifelong entry ban as originally planned, it was reduced to ten years.

Lots of IS material on mobile phones
The court ruling runs to over 50 pages. Mr. Rat did not believe the man’s statements that he belonged to the political “Group 24” in his old homeland, whose members are being persecuted by the government in Tajikistan. When the terrorist suspect’s mobile phone was evaluated, a total of 98 motifs were found with relevant symbols and images of IS, videos with battle scenes and Islamist hate speeches calling for the destruction of all infidels.

“However, the assessment did not reveal any evidence of ‘Group 24’,” the statement said. Rather, there is a suspicion of the commission of relevant Islamist terrorist crimes.

Suspected accomplices have already been repatriated
If the man is soon deported to Tajikistan, all suspects in connection with the alleged planned attack on St. Stephen’s Cathedral will have been deported. The co-suspect, who lives in Germany, has long since returned to his former home and the wife of the suspected IS fanatic, a Turkish woman, has already been deported despite the ongoing investigation by the Vienna Public Prosecutor’s Office.

The fourth suspect committed suicide
She was also banned from entering the country for four years. The woman has since returned to Turkey, where the couple’s three young children also live with their grandparents. A fourth suspect committed suicide in prison. Lawyer Andreas Schweitzer fought against his client’s deportation: ‘I’m surprised it happened so quickly,’ he says. ‘They apparently wanted to get rid of him quickly.’
