Grossi visits – IAEA chief: Fighting at Kursk nuclear power plant “extremely serious”

Date:

The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, visited Russia’s Kursk nuclear power plant on the front lines and warned of the risk of a nuclear incident (see video above). The reactors have no protective cover, making them particularly vulnerable.

So far, operations have been running almost normally, Grossi said. He visited key facilities, including the reactor and machine halls, the control unit and the spent fuel storage area.

According to Russia’s nuclear power company Rosatom, Grossi also looked at tracks at the plant after suspected Ukrainian attacks. Radiation levels were within normal ranges. Russia’s Civil Defense said the ecological situation was being monitored 24 hours a day.

Nuclear power plants should not be used as war targets, the IAEA chief said. After the Ukrainian offensive on August 6 in the Kursk region, Russian authorities reported that debris from a rocket had fallen on the site of the nuclear power plant. Russian President Vladimir Putin had already accused Ukrainian troops of trying to attack the nuclear power plant in the city of Kurchatov on August 22.

Talk to Putin and Zelensky
The visit was an initiative of Putin. According to his own statements, Grossi also wants to travel to Kiev to speak with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. This also concerns the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, which is occupied by Russian troops, and other nuclear facilities in the country.

IAEA experts have already been deployed to Zaporizhia. Their constant presence is intended not only to monitor the situation, but also to deter combat operations.
