Was that a meteorite? A glowing flying object over southern Germany caused much speculation. It is now clear what led to the light spectacle in the evening sky on Tuesday evening.
Shortly after 9 p.m., the sky over southern Germany suddenly cleared. Videos of glowing streaks rolling through the night were quickly published on the X platform. Users speculated what the object might be. Some suspected it was an asteroid or a comet.
Also from Switzerland, France and Italy there were reports about the mysterious, strongly glowing object. An airplane seemed impossible; the light show was too fast for that, but too slow for a falling star. As it turns out: everything is wrong!
Apparently parts of the satellite burned
According to the German Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Relief (BBK), a Starlink satellite entered the Earth’s atmosphere from southern Germany visibly above Switzerland. The Bundeswehr Space Situation Center sent this information to the BBK, a spokeswoman for the federal office said.
A video shows the spectacular streaks of light in the night sky:
In several cities in Baden-Württemberg, the police received calls on Tuesday evening from citizens who had seen a fire glow in the sky. Similar calls were received at the police headquarters in Ravensburg, Konstanz and Stuttgart, as their spokesman announced.
The “Météo Express”, a weather service for France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Switzerland and Andorra, also announced that the light show was visible in some places for twenty minutes and showed the “disintegration of a satellite”.
