An expedition of adventurers to Norway has ended in tragedy: a young woman died while trying to cross the Faroe Islands in a replica Viking ship.
Six people had attempted to sail and row to Norway. For the journey of about 930 kilometers (about 500 nautical miles) they chose an open and engineless ship to bring the world of the Vikings and the maritime history to life. The expedition was led by the Swiss skipper Andy Fitze.
High waves
Over the weekend, he and his fellow campaigners set out to sea on the approximately ten-metre-long wooden ship from Tvøroyri on the Faroese island of Suduroy. But the experiment failed. The open ship capsized near a town on the western Norwegian coast. According to Norwegian information, the weather conditions were bad. There were waves of up to five metres high.
Here you can see a message about the rescue operation.
Passengers pulled from water
While five people were pulled from the water late Tuesday night, all help came too late for a 29-year-old Mexican woman living in the US. Her body was found Wednesday morning a few hundred meters from the accident scene and was pronounced dead at the scene.
