A famous pizza maker from Naples has been criticized for offering pizza with watermelon, accusing him of ruining the Neapolitan pizza tradition. In recent months, Gino Sorbillo has been experimenting with pineapple and bananas.
“Pizza with fruit, that’s not pizza anymore,” responded an outraged user on Instagram. There, Sorbillo posted a video announcing his new creation with watermelon and showing how his new specialty was prepared.
Sorbillo owns several restaurants in Italy and abroad. That is why the agricultural association Coldiretti has now complained that many Italian recipes are being distorted abroad, making the original dish unrecognizable. Macaroni and Cheese, a popular dish in the US, was cited as an example. The pasta with cheese sauce has nothing to do with the Italian pasta tradition.

Pizza most famous Italian word
More positive voices speak of a clever marketing campaign. The craft of Neapolitan pizzaioli was recognized by UNESCO in 2017 as an intangible cultural heritage of the world due to the popular nature of the product. According to a study, ‘pizza’ is the best-known Italian word in the world, ahead of ‘spaghetti’.
