Educators are desperately wanted in Vienna. Barbara P. from Upper Austria wants to move to the federal capital, but the education department gets in the way.
“It is my personal dream to teach in Vienna”, Barbara P. says in an interview with “Krone”. And while teachers are much needed in Vienna, it is extremely difficult to change jobs. Because at a Viennese school, the 50-year-old would initially only receive a fixed-term contract for a year – after that it could be converted into a permanent contract, but the education department cannot guarantee that either.
Only for a junior teacher’s salary
In addition, the former teacher would already be in the twelfth salary scale next school year. In Vienna, however, her salary would be reduced to the level of a young teacher! “I just can’t afford that, I also have to think about my pension,” the teacher complains. In addition, a timely commitment of employment could not be promised.
The notification could also only come in September, but that would be too late, as she would first have to announce at the school in Upper Austria. “It is always said that Vienna is desperate for teachers, and they put such obstacles in our way!”
Staff shortages in Vienna are increasing
Meanwhile, the staff shortage in the federal capital is getting worse. “While at the beginning of the year 25 teachers per month terminated their employment, I now receive 25 terminations per week,” said Thomas Krebs (FCG), the top staff representative at the Vienna Compulsory School.
Many vacant classes threaten in the fall
About 1,000 teachers of compulsory school age already have a special contract and therefore have not completed training. ÖVP education spokesperson Harald Zierfuss also warns: “The question now arises who should be in the children’s classroom in the fall?
