Around 1.95 million people in Austria are between 60 and 78 years old and therefore belong to the so-called baby boom generation. Krone+ takes a closer look at this cohort: who are the boomers, what drives them and what legacy will they leave to their children and grandchildren?
The year is 1963: the average annual income in Austria is 30,000 to 40,000 schillings, the equivalent of 2,200 to 2,900 euros. A single-family home in an urban area costs between 100,000 and 200,000 schillings, and the VW Beetle is the most popular car model. The ÖVP and SPÖ are in charge as a grand coalition, and our skiers dominate international competitions. But 1963 was also the year with the highest birth rate: 134,809 babies were born, an average of 2.82 per woman – a record. The toddlers of that time could celebrate their sixties last year.
