Drama off Sicily – Sailor raised alarm and woke up yacht’s captain

In the case of the luxury yacht that sank off the coast of Sicily in mid-August – krone.at reported – the sailor on duty on the evening of the accident, according to media reports, raised the alarm and woke up the 51-year-old captain.

The sailor said he then took command and gave orders to wake up those sleeping on the ship, according to a report by Italian news agency ANSA on Sunday.

Authorities are currently investigating the 51-year-old, as well as the sailor and an engineer. According to the newspaper “Corriere della Sera”, the captain confirmed that he had been woken up by his sailor. The 51-year-old said that because he “didn’t like the situation”, he gave the order to wake up the rest of the ship’s occupants.

Yacht suddenly tilted to the side
The ship then suddenly tipped over and several crew members fell overboard. “We managed to get back on board and tried to form a human chain to save those who reached the deck,” the sailor said. The captain went ahead and helped everyone.

The sailing yacht ‘Bayesian’, with ten crew and twelve passengers, sank during a storm on August 19 off the coast of the Italian island of Sicily in the Mediterranean Sea. Seven people died in the accident and 15 passengers and crew were rescued.

British billionaire among the dead
Among the dead were British billionaire Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter. Lynch had invited his family and friends onto the yacht to celebrate his acquittal in a billion-dollar fraud case.
