Shock and sadness in Bad Ischl (Upper Austria): During the descent after the anniversary mass on the Traunstein, the old town priest Christian Öhler (66) suffered a heart attack and died in the Wels hospital in the evening.
More than a hundred people took part in the mountain mass on the summit of Traunstein from 10:30 on Sunday. It took place for the 75th time. The Ischl city priest Christian Öhler had invited. Around noon, the 66-year-old started his descent via the Mairalmsteig. He still had an appointment in Traunkirchen.
Pastor fell
Öhler fell and was slightly injured. At 850 meters above sea level, a few minutes’ walk from the Lainau forest road, he collapsed shortly after 15:00. He may have had a heart attack and was unresponsive. The emergency doctor was able to resuscitate him, but his condition was considered extremely critical. Öhler was flown by helicopter to the hospital in Wels, where he died in the evening.
Already out of action during the climb
A 52-year-old hiker from Germany climbed the Traunstein in Gmunden on Sunday morning. In the upper part of the via ferrata, shortly before the Traunsteinhaus, he suffered from cardiovascular problems and dragged himself to the hut.
Those present made an emergency call, after which the BRD-Gmunden and NAH Martin 3 were sent to the scene. The crew of the emergency helicopter was able to pick up the patient at Traunsteinhaus at 12:50 and then fly him to the hospital in Gmunden.
Heat caused many missions
In general, too much exercise in the heat is quite healthy. The mountain rescue team from Gmunden worked up a sweat this weekend. “We were called out for operations four times in the last two days. On Saturday evening, a 62-year-old man had to be rescued from the Naturfreundesteig on Traunstein. The man suffered severe cramps while descending and could not continue. He was rescued with a rope by the medical emergency helicopter “Christophorus 10” and flown down to the valley. On Sunday afternoon, we were first alerted. One person had serious circulatory problems right at the Traunsteinhaus. Due to the Traunstein fair that was taking place today, a team was on the summit plateau and, according to the mountain rescuers, was quickly on the scene.
The next mission is in the afternoon. A 66-year-old man – Öhler – probably had a heart attack while descending the Mairalmsteig. “We were alerted at the same time by the medical emergency helicopter “Martin 3″. A team climbed as quickly as possible to the accident site at an altitude of around 900 meters, where the necessary resuscitation measures were immediately initiated. The man was brought down to the valley by helicopter using a rope and flown to the Wels hospital under continuous resuscitation,” the rescue workers in the Alps said.
And also a paraglider
Before the end of the previous action, the next alarm is given. On Grünberg, a man crashed after take-off with his paraglider and got injured between the trees. We went to the scene of the accident and were able to quickly free the pilot and the paraglider from the treetops and abseil down. He was slightly injured.
