The heat of the past few days, a low water level and the low current are causing a worrying development between the east of Wels and the Marchtrenk power plant. The algae are “blooming” in an unusually high degree. The photos are not pretty to look at and in the worst case there is a risk of a bad smell.
Environmental councillor Thomas Rammerstorfer (Greens) from Wels is sounding the alarm: “In the storage area between the Marchtrenk power plant and the Pernau district, as well as at the Lambach power plant, the algae plague is worse than ever before.”
Limited training activities
Although there is no direct health risk, the development still worries him: “The extreme abundance of algae is of course a problem for larger fish, but also for recreational use.” in some parts of the Traun.
Further developments cannot be estimated. When the algae die, methane can be released and the fermentation gases can cause a bad smell.
Traun has 23 degrees
The cause of the algae plague is almost certain. It is the high water temperatures in the Traun of 23 degrees and more. When a lot of direct sunlight falls on the water surface, the algae in the warm water multiply explosively.
Low current
In addition, there is a low water level, a very low current and (too) many nutrients: “The introduction of artificial fertilizers in agriculture also contributes to the reproduction of algae and other aquatic plants,” Rammerstorfer explains.
