The number of cases of monkeypox infection in Austria continues to rise: on Friday, the Ministry of Health reported another seven cases. A total of eleven cases are currently known in the country. The local authorities are said to have taken the necessary measures. The survey among the contact persons of the sick is already underway.
Monkeypox is notifiable and is primarily transmitted through direct contact. According to the Ministry of Health, vaccination of the general population against monkey pox is “not medically necessary from the current point of view” and is therefore not up for discussion in Austria. Nevertheless, the purchase of a vaccine is already in consultation with the European authorities.
In the case of individual cases, necessary measures would be taken immediately to contain the infection, the authority said. If a vaccine against monkeypox becomes available in Austria, the Ministry of Health will communicate whether and for which groups of people it should be used.
Leaflet with tips published
In order to inform the population as well as possible, the experts from the Ministry of Health have prepared and published a new folder with important tips for protection against communicable diseases. In addition to monkey pox, this fact sheet also deals with sexually transmitted diseases and Covid-19.
Essential tips for prevention and how to act if an infection is suspected were summarized. The brochure is therefore an “ideal companion for participants in major events, festivals and celebrations”.

If you suspect that you have pox-like symptoms (usually pustules/lesions on the skin), you should not go to the hospital yourself, it is not necessary at all. Keep calm and call Vienna 1450, which will clarify what needs to be done, as these cases are usually not hospitalized and can also be cured at home, it said.
