Fatal forest accident in Neukirchen/Enknach in Upper Austria: A 59-year-old who wanted to help a forest owner with woodwork became a victim due to carelessness. He apparently overlooked the falling spruce and drove the tractor right under it. The attempt to change the direction of the fall and prevent the accident failed.
On Tuesday afternoon at around 5:30 p.m., a 33-year-old was carrying out forestry work on his property in Neukirchen an der Enknach with his chopper. Shortly before 7:00 p.m., an acquaintance of his, a 59-year-old, came by with his tractor to later carry out more forestry work together with the 33-year-old. It was agreed between the two that the 33-year-old would cut down the last tree, a spruce, and then they would start their work together.
Rescue operation fails
While the 33-year-old was felling the spruce trees with his harvester, the 59-year-old was a little further away with his tractor. At the moment the spruce fell, the 59-year-old was driving his tractor. The 33-year-old tried to change the direction of the fall with his harvester, but due to its size and falling speed, this was no longer possible. The spruce fell directly onto the driver’s cab of the tractor, fatally injuring the 59-year-old.
