The Merapi volcano on the Indonesian island of Java erupted again on Sunday. At least eleven people died. Three survivors have been rescued and 12 people are missing, local search and rescue forces said Monday.
When Mount Merapi erupted, it threw ash up to two miles into the air. At that time there were 75 mountaineers in the area. 49 of them were evacuated from the area and many were treated for burns, rescuers said.
Video footage showed a huge ash cloud stretching far into the sky, as well as cars and roads covered in ash. It is said that the sky was partially darkened by the ash. Authorities have established a three-kilometer exclusion zone around the crater.
Dangerous and most active volcano in Indonesia
Merapi, over 2900 meters high, is one of the most active and dangerous volcanoes in Indonesia. When it erupts, a dangerous mixture of dust, rock, lava and hot gas often flows down the slopes.
The volcano, the most active in Sumatra, is located about 35 kilometers north of the city of Yogyakarta on the island of Java. A serious eruption in 2010 killed more than 340 people. Tens of thousands had to flee. An increased alert level has been in effect again since the end of 2020.
