A white kangaroo caused a stir on Autobahn 44 near Mönchengladbach in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. A spokesman for the highway police in Düsseldorf reports that a hunter has been alerted because police officers failed to catch the marsupial that kept jumping away on Wednesday evening. Since the exotic animal posed an acute danger to traffic on the highway, the hunter decided to kill the kangaroo.
The kangaroo initially scuttled at a highway ramp, where an early morning witness briefly questioned its sight: the animal gradually moved from the greenery at the roadside to a highway intersection before disappearing into a nearby forest area. The fatal shot was fired a few hours later.
A tranquilizer gun was not immediately available. Emergency services prevented the kangaroo from entering the road where the rush hour had already started. The animal appeared to have escaped from a private residence.
