Online user finds extremely rare Koloss-Kalmar

Date:

For decades he was considered a myth – now an international team of researchers was able to conquer him for the first time with the camera in his natural environment. We are talking about a young Koloss-Kalmar who, unlike the common description, does not seem like a “sample of depth”.

In fact, researchers had no idea what the Kolosss-Kalmar looks like for decades: so far only fragments of his remains, who were discovered in the stomach of whales, were only known. In 1925, zoologists described these animals only based on this. It was only a century later that the Kolosss-Kalmar was documented with modern technology.

The world premiere, however, was much delicate than expected: a 30 centimeter long, fragile that floats something through the image – it is transparent, has clear eyes and is equipped with curved tentacles. “This Koloss-Kalmar is more like a filigree glass sculpture,” Kat Bolstad of the Auckland University of Technology describes the spectacular discovery in an accompanying article.

A dreaded hunter
However, the small dwarf should not be underestimated. According to the scientists, the animal is trapped at a depth of 600 meters near the southern Sandwich Islands in the South Atlantic Ocean still a baby. If it is fully grown, it would certainly be a “impressive hunter” with strong arms and sharp hooks, Bolstad explains. This can even overcome a two -meter -long -long Antarctic veranda. Copies for adults are considerably larger than gigantic calf and become considerably 14 meters long.

Livestream led to discovery
Modern technology is due to the fact that residents of deep -Sea can be kept alive. Even lay people are possible with the help of publicly accessible live streams. This was also the case with the Koloss-Kalmar-an Online Clerk, the animal discovered in the film material of a remote deep sea camera and turned to the researchers.
