A castaway (25) from the Solomon Islands survived day and night in the South Pacific while clinging to an empty petrol can.
As the island nation’s police announced on Friday, the 25-year-old had left with another man in the capital Honiara.
Bus as a swimming aid
Their boat sank in rough seas. To avoid drowning, the 25-year-old emptied a petrol can and used it as a swimming aid.
He eventually washed up on an island about 30 kilometres from Honiara. “People from Kuila village saw him and rescued him,” police said.
The man’s 54-year-old companion is still missing, and police have asked sailors in the area to keep an eye out for him.
