Three plane crashes occurred in Germany on Saturday. Three people were killed and two injured in the accidents involving small aircraft.
In the district of Soest in North Rhine-Westphalia, a small plane crashed immediately after taking off from the airport in Bad Sassendorf, a police spokesman told the German Press Agency. Two people were killed in the accident. They had been attending a pilots’ meeting at the small airfield (see Facebook post below).
The cause of the crash is still unclear. The machine crashed into a nearby field. Eyewitnesses ran to the scene of the accident and tried to provide first aid, the police spokesman said.
A double-decker propeller plane had crashed earlier in Gütersloh-Spexard, south of Bielefeld, and ended up in the bushes. The 67-year-old pilot was killed, according to the police. He was alone on board.
North Hesse: Piper didn’t really gain any altitude
In northern Hesse, two men were seriously injured when a light aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff from Korbach airfield. The single-engine Piper failed to reach altitude and subsequently crashed near the airfield, Kassel police said. It is unclear why the takeoff failed. The men were taken to a hospital and their injuries were not life-threatening, they said.
