Fire alarm late Saturday night in a residential complex in Innsbruck: the battery of a vacuum cleaner exploded on the balcony of a 33-year-old tenant. There was a lot of smoke. A neighbor and the fire brigade who were called were probably able to prevent something worse from happening.
The 33-year-old neighbor put her cordless vacuum cleaner on the balcony after it made strange noises while charging. Ten minutes later, shortly before 10:30 p.m., the battery of the device exploded and it started smoking heavily.
“A 51-year-old neighbor immediately came to the woman’s aid and cooled the battery with water until the alerted fire brigade arrived,” the police reported. The emergency services eventually placed the battery in a container full of water to prevent further heat development.
Higher usage due to “gas bottle”
The cause of the fire was a technical defect. Fortunately, no one was injured. The fire brigade was deployed with almost thirty men because the first report initially mentioned a gas bottle on the balcony. After the stairwell of the apartment building had been ventilated, the operation could be ended again.
