Extreme forecast – fear of constant rain and snow masses

Date:

Almbos are not the only ones who are looking at the current weather forecast with concern: from Thursday it will be extreme, especially in Tyrol! The constant rain in the valley is accompanied by masses of snow on the mountains.

There was lightning blue skies with swimming and hiking weather in Tyrol this weekend – but the change to constant rain and a massive onset of winter in the mountains is now really tough.

From Thursday to Sunday
“It starts on Thursday evening and things will probably only calm down on Sunday,” said Konstantin Brandes of the UBIMET weather service, looking at the latest forecast maps for “Krone”.

Heavy, persistent rain is expected in the valley. “In Innsbruck around 80 to 100 litres per square metre, in the lowlands sometimes more than 150 litres,” the expert explains. For comparison: in Innsbruck, on average, around 80 litres of precipitation falls in September, a whole month.

More than 1.50 meters of snow possible
It is getting deep into winter in the mountains. Brandes expects amounts of around 1.50 or even 1.80 meters in the high mountains, such as the Zillertal Alps. Thanks to snow on the mountains, the chance of large-scale flooding is reduced.

Behind the extreme weather lies a Vb weather situation (pronounced as Five B). A Mediterranean depression that will eventually bring enormous amounts of precipitation from the northeast (Poland and the Czech Republic) to us. According to Brandes, there is a small caveat: “Such weather conditions cannot be precisely determined in advance. A shift of 100 kilometers above Romania can decide whether it rains most heavily in the Tyrolean lowlands or in Salzburg.” The Adriatic Sea provides a lot of energy for the weather kitchen, the sea recently reached temperatures of 28 degrees.

Emergency feeding on mountain pastures – or early into the valley?
How are the operators of the approximately 2,100 Tyrolean alpine pastures reacting? “The vast majority of farmers are receiving detailed information. Many can resort to emergency food and the animals can stay in the barn for a few days,” says Michael Jäger, vice president of the Tyrolean Alpine Association. In some valleys, however, the livestock transporters are already on their way, as some end the mountain season prematurely.

From the middle of this week it will not only be exciting for mountain bike operators…
