First snow photos – sudden change of weather: from midsummer straight into winter

Date:

The weather is changing rapidly these days: while recently people were sweating at 30 degrees and more, the predicted downturn in the weather took place on Thursday evening. Some mountains in Tyrol are already covered in snow; in some cases it has snowed all the way to the higher valleys. There is no relief in sight for a long time; the rain is particularly worrying.

Three degrees in the morning in Ausserfern or in East Tyrol, only seven degrees in Innsbruck – and: bitterly cold temperatures below zero on the mountains from about 2000 meters. The weather change has taken place, from summer straight to winter.

In the west – for example in Tyrol – the mountains are already white. For example in the Stubaital, in the area around Seefeld or in Kitzbühel, as the first photos from Thursday morning show:

Two periods of heavy rainfall
And it will continue in this spirit in the coming days: GeoSphere Austria has issued a snow and rain warning (alert level “orange”, level 3 of 4) for parts of Tyrol until Sunday night. According to expert forecasts, rainfall is expected in two phases.

  • The first precipitation phase until Friday morning affects East Tyrol and the rear Zillertal up to the Brenner region. Heavy rainfall is expected. The snowfall limit drops to 1200 to 1500 meters above sea level.
  • According to current forecasts, a second phase of intense rainfall from Friday morning to Sunday evening is expected in the North Tyrolean lowlands – the region of Kufstein, Kössen, Gerlos to Jenbach-Achensee. In some places, up to 150 liters of precipitation per square meter is predicted.

Danger of mudslides and flooding
“The forecast low snow line will bind some of the precipitation as snow, especially in the mountains and higher areas, but small-scale flooding or mudslides may still occur in the areas below 1,000 metres in the areas mentioned,” warns Elmar Rizzoli, head of the Tyrolean Centre for Snow Crisis and Disaster Management.

Warning for all of Austria, emergency services ready
Large parts of Austria are affected by the huge weather change: Geosphere Austria has issued a rain, snow and wind warning for Thursday until early next week due to the huge cold front. Floods and mudslides are also expected.

“In the higher regions, snowfall is occurring with problems on traffic routes and electricity connections,” the report said. Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) assured on Wednesday evening that the emergency services were prepared.
