The first commercial spacewalk as part of the ‘Polaris Dawn’ mission, originally scheduled for Friday morning, had to be postponed for a few hours shortly before launch. Space company SpaceX has not yet given a reason.
The new target launch time is around 12:00 CEST, as stated in the live broadcast of the field operation. The spacewalk phase is the riskiest period of the entire mission, as former astronaut Ulrich Walter explained.
Unlike missions to the ISS space station, amateur astronauts Jared Isaacman and Sarah Gillis will not be floating freely through space during their 20-minute excursion, but will be attached to a ladder-like structure by foot straps the entire time.
1400 kilometers above the earth
Billionaire entrepreneur Isaacman is leading the mission, which will last up to five days, in coordination with SpaceX founder Elon Musk, who remained grounded. With Isaacman and SpaceX employee Gillis, former fighter pilot Scott “Kidd” Poteet and SpaceX employee Anna Menon, aboard the “Crew Dragon” were launched into space on a “Falcon 9” rocket from the spaceport Cape Canaveral on the west coast of Florida. On Wednesday, the “Crew Dragon” reached the highest point of the mission at 1,400 kilometers above the Earth.
