Free corona testing in doctors’ practices for high-risk patients from October

Date:

After months of negotiations, social security and the medical association have finally reached an agreement: from October, high-risk patients can be tested for corona infection free of charge at the doctor’s office.

“The risk group is covered in time for the autumn season. The free tests form the basis for a decision on the use of Paxlovid,” says Peter Lehner, co-chair of the conference of social insurers.

Requirement for Paxlovid Administration
“I am pleased that we can now quickly start again with the free tests. In the event of a Covid infection, we can now help the risk groups to get a free drug that can save them from a serious course and also reduce the chance of a Long Covid,” said Edgar Wutscher, vice president of the Austrian Medical Association and chairman of the federal curia of local physicians.

The doctors receive twelve euros from social security for a corona test in the practice and another 13 euros for a consultation about a possible treatment with Paxlovid.

Medical association warns, ministry releases everything
After the Vienna Medical Association warned of a “catastrophic corona situation”, the Ministry of Health gave the green light on Wednesday. The situation is comparable to last year and there is “no major cause for concern”, said Katharina Reich, Director General of Health, in the Ö1 “Mittagsjournal”.
