Felt tingling – 38 children in tent camp in hospital after lightning

Date:

Dramatic operation in a Pentecost tent camp in the German city of Soest: The alarm was raised after lightning struck the location. Many people reported feeling the effects strongly. After dozens of affected people complained of tingling in their legs, they had to be taken to hospital.

On Sunday afternoon, two lightning bolts struck the area surrounding the youth fire brigade camp within a minute, WDR reports. “You heard a loud bang and then another loud bang,” said fire department spokesman Kevin Hoebusch. One bolt of lightning struck an old tower on the edge of the campsite, the other struck near the competition site.

Tingling in the limbs was a cause for concern
600 children and young people and approximately 200 caregivers and other visitors took part in the camp. After the lightning strike, everyone present gathered in the center of the square, where two unused stables were used as a meeting point. Countless children and young people complained of tingling in their legs and arms.

After the incident, 62 people were examined by the emergency services and 38 people even had to be taken to hospital for observation. All but four people were released from the hospital on Monday. There were 200 fire and rescue teams on site to care for camp visitors.

The camp continued the next day
The games and camp were interrupted on Sunday. The event could take place again on Monday morning.
