After part of the Carola Bridge in Dresden collapsed into the Elbe on Wednesday night, explosions occurred at the accident site. The structure was in immediate danger of collapsing and controlled demolition was necessary.
Tram tracks, a cycle path and a pedestrian path run over the collapsed bridge. It has collapsed over a length of about 100 metres, two other bridges for car traffic are still standing.
A video of the controlled demolition work can be seen in this article:
The remains of the bridge sank
On Thursday night, explosives were attached to the partially collapsed bridge. On Friday night, explosions could be heard every hour. The bridge could no longer hold and had to be completely demolished. Laser measurements showed that the remains of this bridge were slowly sinking.
Be quick due to the threat of flooding
Time is running out for the emergency services: flooding is forecast on the Elbe from Sunday, which would significantly increase the danger. The approximately 400-metre long bridge consists of three parallel sections: the tram ran over the so-called bridge C and there was a footpath and cycle path. Car traffic ran over the adjacent bridges A and B. All three bridge sections are connected to each other by crossbeams.
Another bridge train was also damaged
According to the fire department’s assessment, the Elbe Bridge in Dresden’s city center is in danger. Section B was also damaged “by the force of the collapse and the displacement of the superstructure,” Simone Prufer, head of the department of road and civil engineering, said on Thursday.
