Without measuring his patient’s blood sugar levels, an around-the-clock nurse gave the 83-year-old insulin – the maximum dose. This caused her to die of massive hypoglycemia. The Serb is now serving an invalid prison sentence.
A Serb worked for just three days as a 24-hour helper for a couple from Lower Austria. On the morning of February 15, he warned his daughter. “I found my mother in bed. She actually stopped responding. There was just a rattling sound that I had never heard before,” she recalled at the regional court in Krems (Lower Austria). The rescuers could do nothing more for the 83-year-old; she died of massive hypoglycemia.
Maximum dose of insulin injected three times
The elderly pensioner and her husband – who has also since died – suffered from diabetes. Before his death, he was able to make a statement to the police: “The nurse was completely confused and did not know what he was doing. He always wanted to inject insulin without measuring.” And he appears to have done the same to the victim. According to the report, he injected the woman with the maximum dose of insulin three times the day before, which led to her death.
The 64-year-old Serbian – he attended nursing training at home – does not want to stand trial for murder by gross negligence. Shortly after the pensioner’s death, he told police: “I have been administering insulin to patients for two years.” He was not aware of any guilt.
In his absence, a sentence is handed down: 15 months partially conditional, five months in prison. But Mr Rat notes: “We now have to see if we can find him at all.” Not legally binding.
