In the midst of the unpredictable weather on Saturday afternoon, a 59-year-old German from Mitterberg-St. Martin went for a walk in Grimming. He got lost in the wet and snowy terrain, fell and injured himself.
Around 15:00, the 59-year-old van Prenten set off towards Prentner Berg. After a while, he lost his way and fell into the impassable, rain-soaked terrain that was already snowing at the time. Around 18:00, he alerted the mountain rescue service himself.
Use under adverse conditions
The Alpine police from Liezen and 19 members of the mountain rescue service from Gröbming then climbed to an altitude of around 1,100 metres and brought the hypothermic hiker, who complained of back pain, back to the valley under unfavourable conditions. There he was handed over to the Red Cross and taken to the DKH Schladming for a check-up.
Urgent warning: plan well, if in doubt cancel
In view of the current weather situation, the Alpine police and mountain rescue services once again point out the current dangers of mountaineering. “Extensive travel planning” and “continuous observation of the weather situation” are essential. In case of doubt, inexperienced mountaineers in particular are advised not to undertake a mountain tour in alpine terrain under such conditions, in order to avoid endangering themselves or the rescue services.
