There is great sadness in the small local fire brigade in Rust in the Tulln district. Because honorary commander Franz H., one of the most deserving, experienced and down-to-earth Floriani, fell victim there to the flood disaster that is currently affecting the entire country.
H., who recently celebrated his 75th birthday, re-entered service on Saturday as a reservist to support his comrades in the battle against the flood. The still very active helper had been helping with emergency pumping operations in a cellar when he suddenly tripped over a staircase, hit the concrete and died from his serious injuries.
“The shock in the city is deep”
“We still can’t believe this tragedy. The shock in the dam and in the entire city surrounding the loss is deep,” says the mayor of the responsible municipality of Michelhausen, Bernhard Heinl, who fights back tears in the interview with “Krone”.
Despite the grief, Holzer’s comrades continued to fight admirably against the flood and against the rising waters of the Perschling, which had begun to overflow at the time this issue went to press. The top of the dam was reached around noon. As in dozens of other places, the power had to be turned off in some places because the flood had reached the local transformer station.
