Former United States president charges Democrats with ‘shameful’ investigation into Capitol attack
Donald Trump has outraged himself against the open Congressional investigation into the January 2021 Capitol attack, months after losing the election to Joe Biden. Just one day after the third televised hearing on the matter, the former president harshly accused Democratic leaders, calling them “left-wing fascists,” while calling Republican vice president of the investigative committee, Liz, “crazy,” Cheney.
At a meeting in Nashville hosted Friday by a Christian and pro-life association, Trump spoke out with his usual histrionics against the work of the committee, which in its third session focused on the pressure the defeated president was putting on his Vice President Mike Pence that he refuses to recognize Biden’s victory over alleged election fraud.
“Pence had a chance to be great, he could have gone down in history,” he said, later criticizing his loyal number two. “But Mike, and I’m sadly saying this because I like him, he didn’t have the courage to act and he missed his chance.”
In front of an audience of conservative Christians, the former president insisted that his defeat to Biden was the result of widespread fraud and attacked the bipartisan committee — made up of seven Democrats and two Republicans — that defines the organization, responsibilities and motivations for the attack on the Capitol. This commission, which has already held three sessions in just over a week, is analyzing whether Trump acted illegally in an attempt to reverse his election defeat.
“Let’s be clear, this isn’t a congressional investigation. It’s a theatrical production of partisan political fiction, wasting our time,” he said ironically. At the hearing the day before, former Pence associates told the committee that Trump was pressuring him to undo the results despite warnings it was illegal, Democrats on the panel said the former president insisted on knowing that a violent mob of his supporters was threatening the Capitol.
The committee’s work will take place in the run-up to the parliamentary elections in November. Trump continues to publicly flirt with the idea of running for president again in 2024.
