Controversial Interior Minister Priti Patel pointed out that preparations for other flights are being maintained and hinted that full judicial review of the legality of the new migration policy will not be awaited.
The last-minute setback at the hands of the European Court of Human Rights has not discouraged Boris Johnson’s government, which this Saturday reassured itself that its program of deporting asylum seekers to Rwanda will eventually go ahead. The maiden flight was blocked late Tuesday night by judges in Strasbourg.
The controversial Home Secretary, Priti Patel, pointed out that preparations for other flights are being maintained and hinted that a full judicial review of the legality of the new migration policy by the UK justice system is scheduled for next month. “We believe that we have fully fulfilled our domestic and international obligations and that preparations for a new flight have already begun,” he said in the House of Commons on Friday.
The controversy took a new turn this Saturday when it was revealed that the more than 100 migrants on the list of those to be deported were wearing an electronic bracelet to prevent them from escaping. Opposition parties and numerous humanitarian organizations immediately made their voices heard, stating that those whose sole crime is applying for refugee status are being treated as criminals.
But Patel ignored every word against his decision, even pointing out that European justice’s intervention was “unfortunate and surprising” as the transfer operation had been approved by British courts.
The refugee problem is global, the minister explains, calling for international solutions, for which the cooperation between the United Kingdom and Rwanda exemplifies and “shows the way forward,” she concluded.
