The floods are also causing several operations in the federal capital. So far, the fire brigade has had to be called out more than 1,300 times. The weather situation in Vienna is currently improving again, but it is difficult to predict whether the water level will continue to fall or rise in the coming hours. In any case, the retention basins for the Vienna River have capacity again.
As a spokesperson for MA 45 (Vienna waters) reported, the levels have remained the same or in some cases even dropped slightly. What will happen in the coming hours is still unpredictable.
Level can rise even further
This is another reason why we remain cautious. “We will see what further rainfall brings.” It cannot be ruled out that water levels will rise again on Wednesday.
Public transport remains largely restricted throughout Vienna. Lines U2, U3, U4 and U6 are also affected. In addition, many tram and bus lines are closed due to the heavy storm. The request is to transfer to trams, buses and on a large scale other metro lines.
Locks around the Danube Canal
The emergency services must therefore continue to take extensive protective measures on several metro lines around the Danube Canal. The affected metro lines are protected against water ingress with stop beams and sandbags.
According to the spokesman, a total of nine minor injuries were reported in Vienna as a result of the weather. Several homes had to be evacuated on Saturday because the Vienna River burst its banks at the Ludwiggasse in Penzing. Two of the affected residents were treated by professional rescue services there.
More than 1300 missions
Within 24 hours, the Vienna Fire Department had handled more than 1,300 missions by Monday morning. At peak times, the fire department received more than 100 call requests per hour. Vienna’s professional rescue service has so far completed a total of sixteen missions directly related to the storms.
Islamic Federation offers assistance
The Islamic Federation in Vienna (IFW) is offering aid to all those affected by the floods and in need of shelter in its mosque communities and other local facilities. Essential goods and food are also being delivered here, according to a press release.
