The collection of signatures will begin once the ILP is accepted for processing, starting on September 26, when it will be registered.
The Basque Pensioners’ Movement (MPEH) will promote a Popular Legislative Initiative (ILP) in the Basque Parliament to debate and approve its own regulations to supplement minimum pensions until they are equal to the Minimum Interprofessional Wage (SMI).
The Alderdi Eder Association of Pensioners of San Sebastián announced this initiative during the meeting held this Monday in front of the Town Hall, with which they a new period of mobilizations after the summer holidays.
Spokespeople Karlos Etxeberria and María Serrano have indicated that the decision to promote an ILP was agreed on September 3 in “a coordination meeting” that the different territorial platforms held in Vitoria, and that it has also been announced in the concentrations that took place today in the other Basque capitals.
As they explained, the Basque movement of pensioners, with the support of ‘lawyers and economists’, has drafted a text of seventeen pages in which they justify and present the arguments of their proposal. This text will be submitted to the registry of the autonomous chamber next week. September 26.
If it is approved for processing, they will then take over the collection ten thousand signatures that they should meet before February to formalize the ILP.
They added that they demand a guaranteed minimum pension income comparable to the minimum wage“, applying “the adequacy criterion laid down in the European Social Charter”, which amounts to 60% of the average salary.
Among the arguments at their disposal, the spokespeople have emphasized “the support” they have received 150 town halls in which motions were approved to increase minimum pensions to 1,080 euros.
The representatives of the Alderdi Eder Pensioners’ Association have called on citizens to get involved in this new initiative and take part in a concentration which they called for the next day, the 26th, before the Basque Parliament to support the delivery of the provisional text.
