Flood waters recede – fire brigade takes a deep breath: “The situation has eased”

Date:

After the emergency services had been battling the water masses almost around the clock for the past few days, Wednesday night brought the first reprieve: “The situation is actually relaxed now,” said Marie-Sophie Gahler, a duty officer at the Upper Austrian State Fire Service Command.

“In some cases, cellars still have to be pumped out or safety measures have to be taken,” Marie-Sophie Gahler of the Upper Austrian State Fire Service Command told the “Krone” on Wednesday morning. “The missions are now part of everyday life again.”

Fortunately, the predicted easing of the storm disaster actually happened on Wednesday night. The state warning center itself is now operating normally again; until recently it had been staffed or on high alert.

Relaxation must remain
“We assume that the water levels will drop,” says Gahler, who expects further relief. For the many thousands of emergency services who fought the water day and night and supported the affected, it was a well-deserved respite after long nights of action.

Trains are running again
There is also good news for train passengers: on Wednesday, the western section will be at least partially back in service. The ÖBB announced that two long-distance trains will run between Salzburg and Vienna via Linz every hour.

The Attersee will remain closed to shipping until Thursday. And for the many people affected by the flooding, the big clean-up is now beginning in Upper Austria.
