Two teenagers saved the life of a pensioner (84) who drove into the flooding in the Innviertel despite the road closure. The two 16-year-olds from Upper Austria had the presence of mind to alert the emergency services. It was not the first incident.
Certainly not funny for the fire brigade, which is already constantly on the move: an 84-year-old driver from Helpfau-Uttendorf in the Braunau am Inn district ignored a roadblock in his hometown on Tuesday evening. With fatal consequences: the overflowing Mattig River hit the vehicle, drove it away and pushed it against a bridge. The pensioner could no longer free himself due to the masses of water and his car continued to sink.
“This won’t end well.”
His great luck was two teenagers who happened to be there: “Suddenly a red car came to the sewage treatment plant, we thought to ourselves: ‘This is not going to end well’”, says Nevio (16), who with his Florian, a friend of the same age, probably became a lifesaver for the declining senior. “We immediately called the emergency number, the water was already up to the driver’s door”, says the young Uttendorfer, who is doing an internship as a plastics process engineer.
Report for violation of the prohibition
Firefighters jumped into the cold water, opened the car door and pulled the 84-year-old out of his car. Fortunately, the senior was unharmed. However, he is now being charged with violating the roadblock.
A 31-year-old in Königswiesen had already made headlines on Saturday when he simply drove around the signs and barriers for the driving ban on the B 119a on his way to go shopping due to the storm – and then got stuck in the flood.
“Partly upset of course”
“Some people are naturally angry,” said Franz Kurzmann, chief of the Uttendorf fire department, commenting on the latest incident. “The roadblocks were not put up for nothing, that has to be taken into account. But people are our priority, the most important thing is that the driver is okay. We will talk about the other issues later.”
