After the waters recede in many parts of Lower Austria, huge mountains of waste come to light. Chairman of the environmental association Anton Kasser calls for bulky waste that cannot be thrown away immediately, to be thrown away later. Meanwhile, the next bad news: the Dürnrohr waste incineration plant has failed!
The Tullnerfeld is under water. Right in the middle is the EVN Dürnrohr power station, which houses the technical rooms of the waste incineration plant. “Even the photovoltaic panels were completely covered by the flooding. Before the masses arrived, we stopped the waste incineration in a controlled manner to prevent damage as much as possible,” says EVN spokesman Stefan Zach.
The duration of the outage is still unclear
At this point, it is not possible to estimate how long the system will be out of service. “First, the water has to drain, then we can pump out the technical rooms and only then will we know what damage has been done,” Zach explains.
Bulky waste flooding areas
Now that the waters are receding, the enormous amounts of waste they have washed up are becoming visible. Mayors, as regional crisis managers, are now obliged to find gravel or asphalt areas for the large flood waste. It could take several months for the items to be collected, says Anton Kasser, chairman of the Lower Austrian Environmental Associations. Electrical equipment, problematic substances or oil-containing materials must be returned to the usual collection points.
Kasser also appeals to all Lower Austrians not to throw away bulky waste that cannot be thrown away immediately within a few weeks. Also, garbage bins should only be made available for collection when they are as full as possible. “Our capacities are limited. “But with sensible behavior and joint action, we will be able to do it as in the past,” says Kasser optimistically.
