Unlimited help: They show their hearts during the clean-up after the flood disaster in Lower Austria: Firefighters from all states, volunteers and victims work together until the end of their strength. Now new troops are being deployed.
70,000 emergency services from Lower Austria and all other states have been busy with disaster relief operations in recent days. On Friday, many of them will be reinforced or replaced by new personnel from all districts of Lower Austria. Stephan Pernkopf, regional council member of the fire brigade: “The coming weekend will be a major effort. Thousands more comrades and volunteers from a wide variety of organizations will do their part and clean up!”
The support is enormous. Firefighters from the Czech Republic are also deployed throughout the country. Firefighters from Germany are helping in Böheimkirchen, which was particularly hard hit by the floods.
“The flood situation is improving, but the concern remains. Relaxation yes, everything clear no! That’s why many districts remain disaster areas,” Pernkopf explains. Currently, 219 properties with 424 people have been evacuated. Places are still difficult or even impossible to reach.
So far, 117 people have been evacuated by helicopter, an unparalleled achievement by the air services of the fire brigade, police and military. The focus remains on Tullnerfeld, the area around St. Pölten and the Pielachtal. Pernkopf concluded: “The lower Kamptal was preserved thanks to enormous efforts by the fire brigade and with intensive support from the armed forces, for example in securing and renovating the dam with Black Hawk helicopters in Hadersdorf, which prevented even more devastating damage!”
State Governor Mikl-Leitner: “Quick help!”
State Governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner travels through the disaster areas: “Many compatriots have nothing left. The suffering is enormous. We help quickly and easily at all levels. Where possible, the compensation committees are already on their way.” She also announced that local banks would provide cheap renovation loans of up to 50,000 euros.
