The Lebanese Civil Defense estimates that 66 people were injured in the attack and that 11 people are missing. Friday’s bombing hit apartments in the Dahieh area. The target of the attack was Ibrahim Akil, a member of the Hezbollah Jihad Council, whose death has been confirmed by the Israeli military.
The balance of fatalities because of the bombings executed on Friday by the army of Israel towards the south of the capital of Lebanon, Beirut, has risen to 50, as confirmed on Sunday by the rescue teams, who stated that search and rescue operations in the area continue.
The Lebanese Civil Defense has said that in addition to the 50 deaths, the attack has caused 66 injuredwhile others Eleven people are still missingso it is feared that the death toll will rise in the coming hours, according to the Lebanese newspaper ‘L’Orient-Le Jour’.
Hours earlier, the Lebanese Ministry of Health’s Emergency Operations Center had said rescue teams had found 45 bodies at the bombed site, adding that debris was still being removed from the area, as reported by Lebanon’s state news agency NNA.
Lebanese authorities on Saturday specified that at least three children were among the dead, raising the death toll to nearly 40, including Ibrahim Akil, A senior official of the main military body of the Shiite party militia Hezbollah which was identified by Israel as the target of the bombing.
Akil was meeting with senior commanders of the Raduán forces under a residential building in a southern Beirut neighborhood when the attack took place, which according to the Israeli version killed another 15 Hezbollah commanders, including Ahmed Wahbi, who was responsible for the group training.
The bombing came days after a wave of coordinated explosions on communications equipment, believed to be by Hezbollah, that killed about 40 people and wounded some 3,000. Much of the international community, including the United Nations, has expressed concern over the incident because of the indiscriminate nature of the attack.
The increase in clashes between Israel and Hezbollah – an Iranian-backed group that has considerable military and political weight in Lebanon – has raised fears about the possibility of an extension of the conflict in the Middle East. In this context, the Israeli army last week presented its “operational plans” regarding Lebanon to the United States.
