The system reaches its limits – family immigration: serious ageing in school classes

Refugee families challenge the education system. Since 2015, classes have become increasingly mixed. This causes problems. The “Krone” knows the exact figures and backgrounds.

The influx of families brings numerous challenges to the Viennese education system. One of the biggest is the ageing of the student body. This is mainly because many children and young people with a non-German mother tongue come to schools in Vienna and cannot easily be placed in the second or third grade because of their age. A question and answer from the FPÖ to the city councillor for education Christoph Wiederkehr (NEOS) shows a significant increase in the number of “overage” children in the compulsory schools in Vienna.
