The powerful hurricane ‘John’ is raging along the Mexican Pacific coast. The tropical cyclone made landfall with winds of up to 195 kilometers per hour. Destructive winds, life-threatening storm surges, flash floods and heavy rainfall are expected.
President Andrés Manuel López Obrador urged residents of the affected areas to seek safety. “Seek shelter and remember that life is the most important thing,” he reminded.
The Civil Protection Authority advised people to stay away from windows, among other things. Due to the weather, school classes were partially suspended in the states of Guerrero and Oaxaca.
On Monday, “John” was upgraded from a tropical storm to a Category 3 hurricane from a maximum of 5 on the hurricane wind scale. The hurricane is the first of this year’s Pacific season to make landfall. “Carlotta” and “Gilma” had previously traveled far offshore.
The second hurricane is coming
At the same time, a new cyclone is developing in the Atlantic Ocean south of the Cayman Islands. The system will gain strength over the Gulf of Mexico and is expected to reach the southern coast of the United States as a strong hurricane on Thursday.
Tropical cyclones form over warm ocean waters. Experts say increasing global warming is increasing the likelihood of violent storms.
Hurricane season begins on May 15 in the Pacific and on June 1 in the Atlantic. In both regions, it officially lasts until November 30.
