Exceptions possible – Ukrainian government bans art from Russia

Date:

The Ukrainian parliament in Kiev has banned the music of Russian musicians in public. The works could have an effect on “separatist moods among the population,” the report said. While there are exceptions for Russian war opponents, the import and distribution of books and other printed media is completely prohibited.

These include works from Russia, Belarus and the Russian-occupied territories. Books from Russia have been subject to censorship in Ukraine since 2016. On Sunday, parliament decided that music by artists of Russian nationality should be added. In detail, a two-thirds majority voted in favor of the bill, which provides that music by artists of Russian nationality will be banned in public. It is argued that this could have an effect on “separatist moods among the population”. Russian music would make it more attractive to assume a Russian identity and weaken Ukraine. However, the law provides for exceptions.

Secret Service Special List
To do this, the artist must have publicly condemned the invasion of Ukraine. The Secret Service SBU will draw up a special list of exceptions.

The Ukrainian government has already imposed several sanctions on its war partner and its allies, including travel bans on certain people and asset freezes. In recent months, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called on the West not to invite Russian artists to charity concerts for Ukraine or perform Russian works.
