The Ertzainas Francisco Javier Mijangos and Ana Isabel Arostegi were murdered by ETA on November 23, 2001, when they were shot from behind while directing traffic on Senpere de Beasain Street.

Two days after the attack, the Ertzaintza located the vehicle used to carry out the attack in the city of Gipuzkoa and neutralized the explosive that was placed to set it off, obtaining various tests and genetic evidence.

Now, the latest scientific advances in forensic genetics have allowed the material authorship of the attack to be attributed to former ETA leader Mikel Kabikoitz Karrera Sarobe, as a coincidence of a DNA sample kept by the Ertzaintza for 21 years

Currently, Karrera Sarobe is serving a life sentence in France for the 2007 murders of two vigilantes in Capbreton and of the French police officer Jean-Serge Nérin in 2010.

Since the founding of the Ertzaintza in 1982, ETA has murdered 15 officers.
