Monday evening there was unrest in Upper Austria. The culprit was a light earthquake that was felt in the Kirchdorf district. So far, however, no damage has been reported. More small tremors could follow soon under Hinterstoder.
Three earthquakes within 64 minutes – on Tuesday evening tectonic stresses were released under Hinterstoder at a depth of three kilometers. Strengths of 1.3 to 2.0 are considered mild. “Such earthquakes occur about 50 times a year in Austria, of which about three in Upper Austria,” explains seismologist Anton Vogelmann from GeoSphere Austria.
No series yet
The three earthquakes in a row cannot yet be seen as a series. The experts cannot predict whether there will be another “rumbling” in the coming days, but an earthquake with more serious consequences is not to be expected. “We are two levels away from the zone in the Mediterranean where the European and African tectonic plates meet. But the Alps are an expression of these underground forces,” explains the scientist, who has received a handful of reports from people who have noticed the earthquakes in and around Hinterstoder.
Earthquake area
No damage has been reported and is not expected with such tremors. In Upper Austria, the area south of Bad Hall and Steyr is the region with the strongest earthquake activity.
