The Basque government will allocate 22.5 million euros this term to promote Rioja Alavesa wine

The Minister of Food, Rural Development, Agriculture and Fisheries has presented to the Basque Parliament the main lines of her department for this term, including the promotion of generational changes in the countryside and at sea, and the port improvements in Mutriku, Ondarroa and Bermeo.

Exactly, today he presented in the Basque Parliament the masterful lines of action of his department this term, including the commitment to promoting generational change in the countryside and the sea, support for winegrowers, wineries and exports from Rioja Alavesa and port improvements in Mutriku, Ondarroa and Bermeo.

For him Rioja Alavesa wine has proposed a ‘roadmap’ based on public-private and interinstitutional cooperation, to promote, among other things, quality, ‘differentiation’ and better positioning. The Basque Government will support actions in both promotion and marketing, with a focus on flourishing state and international markets such as the US, Japan, Mexico, Switzerland and the UK.

Barredo has shown its “maximum respect” for the “professional” initiatives being developed in the area, but has also spoken of the importance of “unity”. Furthermore, it has reiterated its commitment to “differentiation and innovation”, to obtain “different and unique” wines.

As for the primary sectorBaredo has said that generational change in the sector will be a “key objective” in the legislature and that specific programs will be launched to this end to activate the social interest of young people in agriculture and livestock farming, and to overcome the “victimism” that he said is widespread in the sector and that does not motivate young people.

On the other hand, Barredo believes that the fishing sector and the associated industry must “adapt to the new challenges of a changing society”, with challenges such as decarbonisation, the digitalisation of processes and new consumer habits, especially among the youngest.

Finally he announced improvements to the harbour in Mutriku, Ondarroa and Bermeo.
